The Arctic fox ( Vulpes lagopus ) is an iconic inhabitant of the Quebec tundra, primarily in Nunavik. This small canid is perfectly adapted to the extreme cold: thick fur, hairy pads, and an efficient metabolism. In winter, it is entirely white to camouflage itself in the snow, and turns brown or gray in summer. Opportunistic, it feeds on lemmings, birds, eggs, and carrion. It sometimes follows polar bears to scavenge for food. The Arctic fox is also an important player in Inuit cultural traditions. Its population fluctuates according to the cycles of its prey, particularly rodents. It is threatened by global warming and by increasing competition from the red fox, which is expanding northward. Observing an Arctic fox in its habitat is a rare and unforgettable experience. It embodies the resilience and elegance of Northern Quebec's wildlife.
