Collection: Raccoon

The raccoon ( Procyon lotor ) is a nocturnal mammal found in Quebec's forests, agricultural areas, and urban areas. Its black facial mask and ringed tail make it easily recognizable. An omnivore, it consumes fruit, insects, eggs, small animals, and even garbage. Highly intelligent and skilled, it can open containers and manipulate objects with its sensitive paws. It adapts remarkably well to human presence, making it a source of both fascination and conflict. Raccoons play a useful ecological role by cleaning up natural waste, but can also transmit certain diseases such as rabies. They are often seen scavenging in compost heaps or garbage cans. Despite their sometimes negative reputation, they remain a symbol of resourcefulness and adaptation in contemporary Quebec wildlife.
