Collection: Muskrat

The muskrat ( Ondatra zibethicus ) is a semi-aquatic rodent common in Quebec's wetlands: marshes, ponds, rivers, and lakeshores. It builds lodges or digs burrows near water. A herbivore, it feeds on aquatic plants such as cattails and rushes. Although it is sometimes confused with the beaver, it is smaller, with a thin, vertically flattened tail. The muskrat plays an essential ecological role by keeping canals open and promoting plant diversity in wetlands. It is active year-round, even under the ice. Its populations are generally stable, although they can fluctuate depending on climatic conditions and predation. It is also prey for several carnivores and birds of prey.
