Collection: Porcupine

The American porcupine ( Erethizon dorsatum ) is a solitary and placid mammal, well-known in Quebec's forests. Slow-moving but well-protected, it is covered with thousands of formidable quills that it raises when threatened. It easily climbs trees, where it feeds on leaves, bark, and buds. Nocturnal, it spends its days in cavities or hollow trees. In winter, it mainly consumes conifers and rarely descends to the ground. The porcupine is often the victim of road collisions and predator attacks. Despite this, it remains relatively abundant. It plays an important ecological role in forest regeneration and as a food source for certain carnivores. Its leisurely gait, harmless behavior, and adaptability make it a friendly and fascinating animal. It is a unique representative of Quebec's terrestrial biodiversity.
