Collection: Northern Saw-whet Owl

The northern saw-whet owl ( Aegolius acadicus ) is one of the smallest owls in Quebec, living in mixed and boreal forests. Discreet, it measures barely 20 cm and hides in tree cavities or nest boxes during the day. Its mottled brown plumage and large yellow eyes give it a unique charm. Nocturnal, it feeds mainly on small rodents and insects. It is often detected by its repetitive, fluting song, particularly in spring. It is present in a large part of Quebec, including wooded peri-urban areas. Although locally abundant, it is sensitive to logging, which reduces nesting sites. Installing suitable nest boxes is a good way to help it. This owl perfectly represents Quebec's forest biodiversity. Its rare and precious observation embodies the silent magic of boreal nights and the little-known richness of our forests.
