The polar bear ( Ursus maritimus ), often mistakenly called the "polar bear," is a powerful symbol of Quebec's Arctic wildlife, particularly in northern Nunavik. This large predator, perfectly adapted to the harsh climate, travels across the ice floes in search of seals, its main prey. Its dense fur and layer of blubber insulate it from the cold, while its broad paws allow it to walk on the ice and swim long distances. The polar bear is a vulnerable species, facing melting ice caused by climate change. It is also central to Inuit culture, both respected and feared. Its conservation is a global and local issue.
