Collection: Black bear

The black bear ( Ursus americanus ) is the most widespread of Quebec's large mammals, present in the majority of the province's forests. Omnivorous and opportunistic, it consumes a wide variety of foods: berries, insects, vegetation, small animals and carrion. In the spring, it emerges from its den after several months of winter torpor. Solitary, except for the female with her cubs, it generally avoids humans. Although it can frequent peri-urban areas, the black bear prefers vast, quiet forests. It plays an important role in regulating animal populations and in seed dispersal. Observing a black bear in its natural habitat is a highlight for any nature lover.
