Collection: Tengmalm's Owl

The boreal owl ( Aegolius funereus ) is a small, discreet owl found in the mature forests of Quebec, particularly in northern and mountainous regions. It is easily recognizable by its small size, large yellow eyes, and white facial disc. Nocturnal and silent, it feeds mainly on small rodents. It nests in natural cavities or nest boxes, which sometimes makes it easy to observe. Its rhythmic and repetitive call is often the only indication of its presence at night. The boreal owl is a species sensitive to logging because it depends on old trees to reproduce. It is therefore a valuable indicator of the health of old-growth forests. Observing this owl is a rare privilege that requires patience and respect.
