Collection: Long-eared owl

The long-eared owl ( Asio otus ) is a slender and discreet owl found in the mixed forests of Quebec. Recognizable by its long ear tufts and bright orange eyes, it is active mainly at night and camouflages itself perfectly during the day. It nests in old crow or squirrel nests, often in dense conifers. Its regular, deep call sometimes allows its presence to be detected in the silence of the night. The long-eared owl feeds mainly on small rodents, which it hunts using its keen hearing and silent flight. Although widespread, it is difficult to observe because of its stealthy behavior and camouflage. It is also sensitive to disturbance and the reduction of wooded habitats. Its preservation requires the protection of quiet forest areas.
