Martre d'Amérique Jean-Simon Bégin - Photographe Animalier et Artiste Peintre

Collection: American marten

The American marten ( Martes americana ) is a small, agile, and cunning mustelid found in the mixed and coniferous forests of Quebec. It has a silky brown coat with a creamy yellow throat patch and a long, bushy tail. Primarily carnivorous, it hunts small mammals, birds, and insects, but supplements its diet with berries. A highly skilled climber, it spends much of its time in trees. The marten is active year-round, even in winter, and often uses natural cavities to rest or raise its young. It plays an important role in the balance of forest ecosystems. Although it is sometimes trapped for its fur, its populations remain stable in protected forest areas. A discreet but fascinating species, the American marten embodies the secretive and dynamic life of Quebec's deep forests.
