The snowshoe hare ( Lepus americanus ) is a common inhabitant of Quebec forests, particularly boreal and mixed forests. It is known for its ability to change its coat according to the season: brown in summer, white in winter, which allows it to camouflage itself effectively. This nocturnal lagomorph feeds on plants: grasses, leaves, bark and twigs, depending on the season. Very silent, it is often spotted by its tracks in the snow or its sudden flight. The hare is a key species in the ecosystem, being a major prey for several predators such as the lynx, the fox and raptors. Its populations follow a cycle of 8 to 11 years, strongly influencing the dynamics of species that depend on it such as the lynx.
