In winter, the willow ptarmigan ( Lagopus lagopus ) literally transforms. Its plumage turns entirely white, providing perfect camouflage in the snowy expanses of northern Quebec. It survives the harsh winter weather thanks to a diet consisting mainly of willow buds and twigs. Its behavior remains discreet: it sometimes burrows under the snow to protect itself from the cold and strong winds. Very well adapted to life in the tundra, it moves on its feathered legs that act like snowshoes. The ptarmigan plays an important role in the food chain, being prey for many predators. An emblematic species of the Arctic regions, it is also a symbol of resilience in the face of extreme conditions.
