Collection: Sandhill Crane

The sandhill crane ( Antigone canadensis ) is a majestic bird that inhabits certain regions of Quebec, particularly in Abitibi, James Bay, and certain agricultural areas in the south. Large in size, it is distinguished by its gray plumage, its bright red cap, and its powerful call, a deep rumble that resonates for miles. It frequents marshes, wet meadows, and farmland, where it feeds on roots, seeds, insects, and small vertebrates. The sandhill crane makes an impressive migration to the southern United States each fall. In the spring, we witness its spectacular courtship displays, including jumps, calls, and synchronized movements. Its population is growing, but certain threats persist, notably the loss of wetland habitats. Watching these birds in flight, with outstretched wings, is an unforgettable moment. They symbolize the elegance and vitality of Quebec's nature.
