Collection: Ruffed grouse

The ruffed grouse ( Bonasa umbellus ) is a bird of Quebec's mixed forests. It is discreet and moves along the ground in search of buds, leaves, insects, and berries. Its streaked brown-gray plumage provides excellent camouflage in the undergrowth. In winter, it shelters under the snow, where it digs insulating cavities. A territorial male, it is famous for its drumming on a stump or log, a dull sound used to attract females and mark its territory. The ruffed grouse plays an important ecological role by contributing to seed dispersal and being a key prey for several predators. Its presence reflects the good health of mature forests.
