Collection: Common Nighthawk

The common nighthawk ( Chordeiles minor ) is a secretive crepuscular bird of Quebec, often heard before being seen. Active at dusk, it emits a distinctive nasal call and makes rapid, undulating flights in search of flying insects. Its speckled brown plumage provides perfect camouflage on the ground, where it nests directly, often in clearings, sandy soils or even flat roofs in urban areas. Despite its once widespread presence, the nighthawk is experiencing a marked decline, mainly due to the disappearance of open habitats and the decline in insect populations linked to pesticides. This bird is protected in Quebec, and several conservation projects aim to monitor it and protect its nesting sites. Raising awareness of its presence helps to better promote nocturnal birds and the discreet but essential biodiversity of our open environments.
