Collection: Common Eider

The common eider ( Somateria mollissima ) is an emblematic sea duck of the Quebec coast, particularly present in the St. Lawrence Estuary and the Gulf. The male has contrasting black and white plumage, and the female has brown speckled plumage. They nest on rocky islands, sheltered from predators. The eider is best known for its exceptional down, sustainably harvested in certain sites without harming the species. This ultra-insulating down, used in high-end clothing and bedding, is collected after nesting. Outside the breeding season, eiders form large flocks at sea, feeding on mollusks and crustaceans. Although their population is stable, it remains vulnerable to oil spills, illegal hunting, and human disturbance. Observing the common eider in its natural habitat is a unique experience. Its conservation combines northern traditions and respect for maritime biodiversity.
