Collection: Swan

Quebec is home to two species of swans: the trumpeter swan ( Cygnus buccinator ) and the mute swan ( Cygnus olor ). The former, native, is the largest bird in North America. It has pure white plumage, a black beak, and a sonorous call reminiscent of a trumpet, hence its name. The latter, introduced from Europe, is recognizable by its orange beak marked with a black tubercle at the base. These two swans frequent the calm bodies of water, marshes, and shallow bays of Quebec. They feed on aquatic plants, which they reach with their long necks. The trumpeter swan, a species in recovery, is the subject of scientific monitoring and protection measures. Observing these large, majestic birds is a privilege for any naturalist. Their presence reflects the quality of Quebec's wetlands and reminds us of the importance of preserving these fragile, biodiversity-rich habitats.
