Collection: Barred Owl

The barred owl ( Strix varia ) is one of Quebec's most widespread and vocal species. Found year-round in mixed and deciduous forests, it is recognizable by its brown plumage with white stripes, its large dark eyes, and its unique call. Active mainly at night, it feeds on small mammals, amphibians, and sometimes birds. The barred owl prefers old-growth forests with closed canopies and nesting cavities. However, it tolerates some human presence and can be observed on the outskirts of wooded urban areas. It is an excellent bioindicator of forest health. Appreciated for its presence and vocalizations, it is a favorite subject of nature photographers. Preserving it means maintaining the diversity and acoustic richness of our Quebec forests.
