The Burrowing Owl ( Athene cunicularia ) is an unusual owl from Quebec, rare and mainly found in certain open areas such as sandy prairies and old airfields. Unlike other owls, it nests on the ground, in abandoned burrows, often those of marmots or foxes. Small, with golden eyes and marked eyebrows, it is active during the day, which makes it easier to observe. The owl feeds mainly on insects, small mammals and reptiles. It is threatened by habitat loss, human disturbance and pesticides. The burrowing owl fascinates with its curious behavior and resilience in a changing environment.
