Collection: Mountain caribou

The mountain caribou is a distinct population of woodland caribou, adapted to Quebec's alpine environments, particularly in the isolated massifs of the Gaspé Peninsula. This rare cervid thrives in harsh conditions above the tree line, where it finds refuge from predators and human disturbance. Its survival depends on its isolation and its ability to exploit limited resources at higher altitudes, particularly lichens and shrubs. Unfortunately, the mountain caribou is currently in serious decline, mainly due to habitat fragmentation, silviculture, and disturbances related to outdoor activities. This caribou symbolizes the conservation challenges of Quebec's wildlife in mountainous regions. Protection efforts are underway to safeguard this emblematic subpopulation. Preserving the mountain caribou means preserving a unique and fragile portion of Quebec's biodiversity.
